Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco Fails to Break Her Terrible Rotten Tomatoes Movie Streak With Role Play

The Big Bang Theory’s Kaley Cuoco became a huge hit with viewers of the iconic comedy series, and also gained positive reviews for her “hot mess” role in dark-comedy mystery series The Flight Attendant, but her movie appearances have not been quite as popular. Cuoco’s latest movie, Role Play, has continued the star’s terrible record with Rotten Tomatoes critics despite bringing with it a star-studded cast including David Oyelowo, Bill Nighy, and Connie Nielsen.

Released on January 12, Role Play is an action comedy that features Cuoco as an international assassin embroiled in a deadly game of survival to protect her family from other assassins. While the premise of the movie is solid enough, the movie has garnered a meager 19% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer, with audience scores showing a slightly better 54%. This adds another underwhelming title to Cuoco's movie filmography, which currently has a high score of 59% for her 2022 movie Meet Cute and a low of 8% for 2014’s Authors Anonymous.

In contrast to her film career, Cuoco has found significant success in television. Her role as the voice of Harley Quinn in the current animated series boasts an impressive 97% Tomatometer score. Similarly, her work in Based on a True Story and the iconic The Big Bang Theory have been well-received, with scores of 76% and 81%, respectively. Similarly, The Flight Attendant proved that Cuoco could certainly lead a series, with its first season scoring 97%, and the second delivering a solid 86%.

Why Has Role Play Failed to Break Kaley Cuoco’s “Rotten” Streak?

Arriving on Prime Video last week, Role Play could have been the movie that finally gave Cuoco a break in her incredibly unfortunate run of rotten splats. However, although many reviews have noted that the film is “enjoyable,” the lack of originality has condemned the movie, and its star, to another shocking set of scores.

When it comes to audience reviews, many have seemingly gone into the film, which is available to Prime Video subscribers, with low expectations, something that has helped boost that side of the review coin. Those who enjoyed it have done so because it is a one-shot, low-investment bit of entertainment that isn’t looking for hours of concentration from viewers. Those who did not find the film worth their time have cited exactly the same reasons for hating the film, along with many commenting that the movie is exactly the kind of “cheap filler” that subscription services churn out to try and keep their new content lists stacked.

Currently, Cuoco is set to reprise her voice role of Harley Quinn in Kite Man: Hell Yeah! later this year, but has no other projects in the pipeline. Although there is no doubt that the actress will not be too far away from her next appearance, hopefully she can manage to find her film feet with her next venture.
