Chicago Med's new showrunner teases the possibility of cameos from departing main characters. NBC's long-running medical will be different, both in front of the camera and behind the scenes, when it returns in a few weeks. Allen MacDonald has stepped in as showrunner, taking over from Diane Frolov and Andy Schneider. Chicago Med season 10 will also introduce new characters while saying goodbye to Dominic Rains in the role of Dr. Crockett Marcel.
In comments to Variety, new showrunner Allen MacDonald teased that Crockett and other former Chicago Med characters could make cameos. MacDonald takes over the showrunner position after Frolov and Schnider exited, citing a desire to explore other opportunities, and he says that he likes the open-ended world of the One Chicago franchise and likes checking in with people. Read the quote below:
There’s always a chance that there will be a cameo appearance down the line by him and others as well. One thing I love about the One Chicago world is just because someone has exited the show, they’re still part of the world. And I like checking in with people.

Chicago Med has lost several key cast members over the last few seasons. In addition to Rains, actors such as Brian Tee, Yaya DaCosta, Nick Gehlfuss, Torrey DeVitto, and Guy Lockard, among others, have all left the NBC series. In several cases, their characters got happy send-offs. Ethan (played by Tee) and April (played by DaCosta) got married, while Will Halstead (Gehlfuss) and Natalie (DeVitto) walked off together, all smiles.
The series has attempted to address those absences, adding Luke Mitchell as a new face who has a history with Oliver Platt's Dr. Charles. Chicago Med season 10 will also add The Bear's Sarah Ramos and Anybody But You actor Darren Barnet. But even with the changes, the new showrunner's remarks show that there's room to bring back characters like Halstead, who had a divisive Chicago Med exit.
Our Take On Chicago Med's Cast Changes
It's Part Of A Healthy Procedural
Chicago Med has had a few showrunners so far, but it hails from Law & Order creator Dick Wolf and One Chicago exists in the same overall universe. Although cast changes, especially ones that are abrupt, are no doubt disappointing, it's part of keeping a drama fresh with new conflict and fresh dynamics. With a new showrunner at the helm, however, perhaps he can make good on the tease of visits from familiar faces.
Chicago Med season 10 airs Wednesdays at 8 PM on NBC and streams the next day on Peacock.
