Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire tossed on its proton pack and got to work during its first week in theaters, coming out on top of the box office and wrangling a staggering $45.2 million domestically. The movie finally boots titles like Dune: Part Two and Kung Fu Panda 4 from the top spot, although they’re both still holding on in the second and third places, respectively. The weekend was also a good one for horror releases, with both Immaculate and Late Night with the Devil scaring up some good sales. Meanwhile, other features like Imaginary, Arthur the King, and Love Lies Bleeding continue to intrigue audiences and accumulate earnings.
The fifth film in the franchise that will celebrate its 40th anniversary this year was the overall champion at the box office, nabbing a worldwide total of $61.6 million. The numbers mark a momentous occasion for the Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, and Mckenna Grace-led feature for a number of reasons. For one, it’s the second-largest haul from the film series since the 2016 female-heavy Ghostbusters reboot and also gave the franchise the push it needed to cross the $1 billion threshold. Blending the old with the new, the Gil Kenan-helmed production is drawing in audiences of all ages to see legendary characters played by the likes of Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd back in action alongside the newbies.
Almost one full month since its cinematic debut, Denis Villeneuve’s sequel to his sci-fi epic, Dune: Part Two, continues to entertain audiences, adding $47.5 million to its haul. Villeneuve and Warner Bros. are undoubtedly preparing to dive through their cash like Scrooge McDuck as this brings the running total up to $575 million. Like Frozen Empire, Dune: Part Two is also celebrating a few milestone moments, including hitting the billion-dollar mark. Meanwhile, Kung Fu Panda 4 topples both the Dune and Ghostbusters franchises, with this weekend marking its crossing over the $2 billion lifetime gross. The Jack Black-led movie isn’t showing any signs of slowing down as this week, it drop-kicked around $72 million extra into its coin purse.
Oh, The Horror! 'Immaculate' and 'Late Night With the Devil' Open at the Box Office
Close
While we’re a bit biased, 2024 is shaping up to be dubbed as the year of horror with Immaculate and Late Night with the Devil both making solid dents at the box office. For the former, the movie about a nun (Sydney Sweeney) who comes to discover there’s something sinister lurking at her convent, deposited $5.36 million into its account, giving Neon its biggest opening weekend to date. Meanwhile, Late Night with the Devil, a found footage horror flick starring David Dastmalchian as a late-night talk show host, scared up $2.83 million, with a particularly demonic $666k haul on Sunday.
With Dune: Part Two coming up on its month mark in theaters, will next week see its numbers take a dive? We’ll just need to wait and see. This weekend will also welcome titles including Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire which will certainly shake things up for its action-heavy competitors.
