Without a doubt, Sharon Case’s increasingly unhinged Sharon Newman on The Young and the Restless clobbered her competition for the lead spot. Making fans forget about Eileen Davidson’s DID performance as Ashley, Sharon both unnerved and shocked the audience with her actions. Or was it all just a dream…?
The Descent
By an incredibly wide margin, fans voted for Case giving her the top spot with 65% of the vote, cruising far past contenders Mark Grossman (Adam), Michelle Stafford (Phyllis), and Linden Ashby (Cameron). We’re surprised that Ashby wasn’t closer to the top as he was a disturbing facet of Sharon’s psyche.
With 30 years under her belt, Case still manages to make things fresh and interesting as if it were her first go-round. Yet without all that history, her current story wouldn’t have had as much meaning and ferocity. Case tapped into Sharon’s need for vengeance because of the death of Cassie (Camryn Grimes). As we watched Sharon’s descent into the darkest depths of her soul, Case had audiences riveted to their seats.
While her scene partners certainly contributed to her performance, it was most likely the Sharon-centric episode that put her over the top where it was just her and her victim, Heather (Vail Bloom). Case’s performance was incredibly believable as someone who has become completely unglued.
Did She Really Kill Heather?
Fans are wondering if Sharon actually killed her or if she conjured it in her mind after possibly waking up to Heather’s dead body. Viewers like to have a character to relate to, and while many can empathize with Sharon’s struggle with mental illness, Case sold it almost too well. Congratulations on being Soap Hub’s September performer of the month for Y&R.
